A palace that became a museum
The Villahermosa Palace was built in the eighteenth century and rebuilt in a neoclassical style around 1805. Rafael Moneo turned it into a museum in 1990-92, with rooms around an atrium lit from above. The museum opened on 8 October 1992, and in 1993 the Spanish state bought the collection of Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Eight centuries of painting, from Van Eyck to Picasso
The collection covers eight centuries of European painting. You find Jan van Eyck's Annunciation diptych, Caravaggio's Saint Catherine, Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII, a Rembrandt self-portrait, Van Gogh's Les Vessenots at Auvers and Picasso's Harlequin with a Mirror.
